Two different asbestos materials lived under the hood of the same car, and they are routinely confused. Getting them apart matters, because the amount of asbestos involved — and therefore the exposure — is not remotely comparable between them.
The distinction that governs this page
Moulded phenolic parts — a distributor cap, an ignition block, a transmission component — were made from the same asbestos-filled phenolic compound described everywhere else on this site. Asbestos was a filler — a minority fraction of the material, varying by grade and by customer order — added to stop the part shrinking as it cooled in the mould and to hold its dimensions in engine heat.
Friction materials — brake linings, brake pads, clutch facings — are a different material that happens to share a binder. Here asbestos is not a filler but the primary constituent, with phenolic resin holding it together:

No single percentage describes moulding compound, and low single-digit figures understate it badly. Content varied by grade and by customer order — one manufacturer’s interrogatory answers describe compounds made “with varying formulas or percentages (by weight) of asbestos, depending on the particular requests and specifications of [its] customers.” Ranges quoted for friction materials vary by manufacturer, application and year in the same way.
So a brake lining is not “a moulded phenolic part with asbestos in it.” It is an asbestos product bound with phenolic resin. The site covers both because the resin connects them and because the same worker often met both, but the quantities — and therefore the exposure — are not comparable.
Moulded phenolic parts
Distributor caps and rotors are the signature automotive application. The cap sits directly on the engine, carries high-tension current between electrodes millimetres apart, and must not track, carbonise or distort. That is the same specification an arc chute answers, and it was met the same way.
Publicly filed litigation records name Union Carbide (Bakelite) and General Electric among the compound sources whose material went into distributor caps and ignition components. Plastic Moldings Corporation of Cincinnati — a custom shop that bought compound and moulded to order — is described in these records as producing automotive parts alongside electrical panel boxes and housewares, across an alleged 20–25 year exposure period. Reichhold Chemicals is described as supplying compound to downstream shops making automotive parts among other lines.
Also moulded, in the same material family: ignition blocks and coil components, transmission housings and components, and assorted under-hood parts where heat and electrical isolation met.
The plants: the Big Three — Ford, General Motors, Chrysler — and independent suppliers including Bendix, Borg-Warner and Eaton, described in publicly filed records as employing large numbers of workers in phenolic-compound handling.
Friction materials
Brake and clutch work is the most familiar asbestos exposure route in the automotive trades, and it is a different problem from moulding.
The exposure is not in the intact part. It is in what service work does to it:
- Grinding and arcing linings to match a drum — a dedicated dust-producing operation
- Bevelling and drilling new linings during a reline
- Blowing out drums and clutch housings with compressed air, which aerosolises accumulated wear debris in an enclosed bay
- Sweeping that debris off the shop floor afterwards
- Riveting and removing bonded linings
Brake wear debris is not simply pulverised lining. Friction heat converts much of the chrysotile to forsterite, but publicly filed litigation records and alleged expert testimony have long disputed how complete that conversion is and how much respirable fibre survives in the residue. This is contested territory, and it is contested by expert testimony on both sides rather than settled by either.
Who was exposed downstream
The moulding-shop workers described in this site’s occupations pages handled compound in bulk. The automotive population is different and much larger:
- Auto mechanics and brake specialists, doing relines, clutch replacements and drum work
- Fleet, transit and truck maintenance workers, on far heavier friction assemblies
- Railroad and heavy-equipment mechanics
- Parts-counter and warehouse staff handling and cutting bulk lining stock
- Shade-tree and hobbyist mechanics doing their own brakes and clutches at home
- Family members — the take-home pathway
Take-home exposure deserves its own line here. Brake dust travels on clothing, in a car’s cabin and into a laundry basket. Spouses and children with no occupational history of their own have documented mesothelioma claims arising from washing work clothes. If you are reconstructing a family member’s exposure, “what did he do at home on weekends” and “who washed his clothes” are as material as his job title.
Identifying a part
For moulded parts, the questions match those on the electrical apparatus page: manufacturer and product line, any grade or file number on the part, date of manufacture rather than installation, and whether the work disturbed the material.
For friction materials, different questions carry the weight:
- Date and vehicle — asbestos friction material remained in the U.S. aftermarket long after original-equipment use declined, so a later repair does not imply an asbestos-free part
- Aftermarket versus original equipment — these frequently differed in composition
- What the work involved — grinding, arcing, bevelling and air-blowing are the operations that generate respirable dust; a bolt-on pad swap is a different question
- Whether compressed air was used to clean drums or housings, and whether the bay was enclosed
Asbestos-containing friction products were never comprehensively banned in the United States. The 1989 EPA ban was largely vacated in 1991, and certain categories remained legally importable and saleable long afterwards.

Everything above is drawn from publicly filed litigation records and alleged witness testimony. Composition ranges, customer relationships and date windows appear in those records as allegations and testimony rather than as established findings. Product lines frequently included both asbestos-containing and asbestos-free grades, and the fibre content of friction materials varied by manufacturer, application and year.
